Albania\u2019s ranking in Europe regarding fertility rates for women is worsening year by year.<\/p>\n
Eurostat\u2019s current data shows that in 2022, Albania had the lowest fertility rate for women, leaving behind only Spain and Malta. Italy, which is considered to have one of Europe\u2019s oldest populations, had a higher fertility rate than Albania in 2022, while in 2021, Albania performed better.<\/p>\n
Year after year, women of reproductive age plan to have fewer children. Postponement of marriage, careers, and lifestyle changes are making Albanian women less inclined to create families or have more than one child. However, in Albania, economic factors also have a significant influence, as women still desire to have more children than they actually do.<\/p>\n
Data from the Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) shows that in 2022, the fertility rate dropped to 1.21 children per woman of reproductive age, down from 1.32 in 2021. This marks the strongest decline since 2015.<\/p>\n
This means that out of 100 women of reproductive age, only 121 children are born, compared to 132 born in 2021. From 2001 to 2023, the fertility rate has halved, dropping from 2.31 children per woman to 1.21 children.<\/p>\n
In 2022, Albania is seen to have one of the lowest birth rates in Europe, leaving only Spain (1.16) and Malta (1.08) behind.<\/p>\n
The fertility index is below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman, meaning a couple cannot replace themselves.<\/p>\n
In Europe, in 2022, France had the highest fertility index of 1.79 children per woman, followed by Romania (1.71) and Bulgaria (1.65). In the region, Serbia ranks better with 1.59 children per woman, despite having an older population than Albania, it has a better demographic perspective.<\/p>\n
According to internal data from INSTAT, the synthetic fertility index dropped to 1.21 children per woman in 2022 from 1.34 in 2020 and 1.36 in 2019. In 2001, according to INSTAT, this index was 2.1, while in the 1970s, it was over 5.<\/p>\n
Birth rates fall for young ages and rise for older age groups<\/strong><\/p>\n INSTAT reported that in 2022, birth rates decreased for the age groups 20-24 and 25-29, 35-39, while they slightly increased for older age groups. In 2022, the average age at childbirth was 29.5 years.<\/p>\n Last year, 24,688 babies were born, a 13 percent decrease compared to 2021. The gender ratio at birth is 107, indicating that for every 100 girls born, 107 boys are born.<\/p>\n This ratio is higher than the natural ratio, which is 105.<\/p>\n Specific fertility rates by gender for 2022 support the fact that men start childbearing relatively later than women, approximately five years later, while fertility rates after the 30s are higher for men than women.<\/p>\n The Gross Reproduction Rate (GRR) is a good indicator of measuring the growth of future generations. It measures the rate at which women replace themselves during their reproductive years. The calculation method of the GRR is the same as the Total Fertility Rate (TFR), but in this case, only female births are taken into account.<\/p>\n In 2022, the GRR is 0.59, meaning that women in Albania are about 41 percent away from replacing themselves. This indicator is directly influenced by women\u2019s reproductive behavior as expressed by the TFR and by the gender ratio at birth.<\/p>\n Teenage fertility has decreased compared to a year earlier. In 2022, there were 10.0 births per 1,000 girls aged 15-19, down from 12.1 births in 2021.<\/p>\n With this population trend, Albania\u2019s population is experiencing an irreversible decline, as there will be fewer and fewer females, who are the basis of reproduction.<\/p>\n In 2021, the GRR is 0.63, meaning that women in Albania are about 37 percent away from replacing themselves.
