Climate change has become the biggest threat to the health of the global population, where children are the most exposed.<\/p>\n
A report prepared by the Institute of Public Health (IPH) with the support of UNICEF on “climate changes and effects on children’s health in Albania” highlighted the direct impact of climate on children’s health.<\/p>\n
The data showed that climate change contributed to an increase in gastrointestinal diseases, respiratory diseases, allergies, asthma, extreme temperatures and mental health problems.<\/p>\n
Gastroenteritis is clearly related to global warming and this is evidenced by the increasing numbers, where 32 thousand cases in children 0-14 years old have been reported in 2022.<\/p>\n
Data show that 6.1% of children have diarrhea every two weeks during the year, accounting for more than 200,000 cases per year.<\/p>\n
Experts are of the opinion that rising temperatures are a risk factor as they favor the multiplication and spread of infectious agents in drinking water and food in the family.<\/p>\n
Flooding also disrupts water and sewage systems, increasing the risk of outbreaks of waterborne infectious diseases.<\/p>\n
The report says there is consistent evidence demonstrating an increased risk of gastroenteritis and infections among children.<\/p>\n
300-1,000 new cases of gastroenteritis per 100,000 children per year are attributed to every 1 degree Celsius increase in temperatures, which translates to up to 5,000 new cases each year in the next decade.<\/p>\n
Hospital admissions and missed school days will add up. Severe and neglected cases of diarrhea may also increase, potentially affecting child mortality trends.<\/p>\n
The fear of diseases after the pandemic but also the aging of the population has increased the demand for examinations, causing the business of private clinics not only to increase in number but also to increase their profits significantly.<\/p>\n
INSTAT says that the income of these businesses increased by 67% in the last 3 years.<\/p>\n
