The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107, called on Thursday during an extraordinary meeting of the Serbian Government for the formation of a team to oppose Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe.<\/p>\n
At the meeting in Belgrade, where the Speaker of the Assembly of Serbia, Ana Brnabic, also participated, Vu\u010di\u0107 asked those present to fight more in foreign policy, through cooperation between the Government, the Parliament and the Presidency, writes Radio Free Europe.<\/p>\n
“We have difficult and important tasks, and I would ask all the members of the Government, regardless of what functions they will perform after the formation of the new government, to work with dedication in performing these tasks”, said Vu\u010di\u0107.<\/p>\n
Vu\u010di\u0107 said that there are some “important things” that must be agreed upon, regardless of the fact that the new Government of Serbia will be formed in a short time.<\/p>\n
He said that Serbia faces difficult challenges, mentioning the dialogue with Kosovo, as well as the possibility of Kosovo’s admission to the Council of Europe.<\/p>\n
Vu\u010di\u0107 asked the Government to form a team and send everyone an informal document, in which Serbia’s position on Kosovo’s possible membership in the Council of Europe will be presented.<\/p>\n
Kosovo aims to become a member of the Council of Europe in the coming months, after last week, the Committee for Politics and Democracy of this organization approved the report of the rapporteur for Kosovo, Dora Bakoyannis, who recommended that it has fulfilled the conditions to be became a full member of the Council of Europe.<\/p>\n
The Parliamentary Assembly is expected to vote on Kosovo’s membership in April, and if it gives the green light, then the Council of Europe’s Council of Ministers must give the final say in May.<\/p>\n
Vu\u010di\u0107 admitted, however, that “our chances are minimal”.<\/p>\n
