North Macedonia will co-sponsor a resolution at the United Nations (UN) to declare July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide in 1995, Macedonian Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani said on Monday.<\/p>\n
The resolution will be presented on April 17 before the UN General Assembly and will be voted on in May 2.<\/p>\n
“In anticipation of the 30th anniversary of the genocide to be commemorated in 2025, where at least 8,372 people lost their lives and as many families were destroyed, we call on the UN General Assembly to adopt the following resolution to mark July 11 every year as an international day”, said Osmani.<\/p>\n
North Macedonia joins the United States, Germany and several other countries as co-sponsors of this resolution.<\/p>\n
“The Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide from 1995 unreservedly condemns any denial of the genocide and calls on all members of the UN to preserve the facts and spread them throughout the educational system, developing special programs for the commemoration and prevention of the same”, said Osmani.<\/p>\n
Asked how he expects this to affect North Macedonia’s relations with Serbia, given that the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107, has warned that he will call some countries partners and not friends, Osmani said that the adoption of the resolution is particularly important for Serbia and he does not think that this will affect the relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n
According to the Macedonian Foreign Ministry, so far the resolution has been supported by more than 17 countries, including Slovenia, Italy, Liechtenstein, Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, Albania, Turkey, Jordan, Malaysia, Chile and New Zealand.<\/p>\n
The resolution, as Osmani said, among others refers to the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention on the Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, UN Resolution 827 on the establishment of the International Court for War Crimes in the former -Yugoslavia, as well as the court’s eight convictions for crimes against Bosnian Muslims, including Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic, as well as the ICJ’s decision in February 2007 to classify the Srebrenica atrocity as genocide.<\/p>\n
In July 1995, Bosnian Serb forces killed over 8,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica.<\/p>\n
The crime was recognized as genocide by the International Court of Justice in The Hague.<\/p>\n
For years, official Belgrade opposes the adoption of resolutions or statements that describe the crime in Srebrenica as genocide.<\/p>\n
Serbian officials say that a terrible crime took place in Srebrenica, but they do not accept that it was genocide.<\/p>\n
To date, more than 50 people have been sentenced to more than 700 years in prison for genocide and other crimes in Srebrenica.<\/p>\n
