The American ambassador in Belgrade, Christopher Hill, said that Serbia’s membership in the European Union means the normalization of relations with Kosovo, but not its “de jure” recognition.<\/p>\n
In an interview with the Belgrade weekly, NIN, Ambassador Hill said that “the Europeans are looking for what they are looking for, and that is normalization”.<\/p>\n
“They want peace and security in the region, of course also between Kosovo and Serbia. I think they have said very clearly that there are members of the European Union who do not recognize Kosovo, so the real issue is to try to achieve normalization where the borders will not be dividing borders, but borders that unite, borders that really unite, and I hope people understand what we’re really saying here about the future and what people’s lives will look like. And that’s why I would like to see much more progress on the normalization plan, and it’s clear that the EU has that in mind as well,” said Ambassador Hill.<\/p>\n
Last year, Kosovo and Serbia, with the mediation of the European Union and the support of the United States, agreed in Brussels and Ohrid on a normalization agreement, which does not foresee mutual recognition, but good neighborly relations, recognition of documents and symbols and respect for each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, which is considered de facto but not de jure recognition. The agreement requires that the parties do not hinder each other in the integration processes as well as fulfill all the agreements previously reached between them.<\/p>\n
On April 22, the Foreign Ministers of the European Union approved the changes in chapter 35 of Serbia’s membership negotiations, making part of it the obligations arising from the agreement on the normalization of relations with Kosovo.<\/p>\n
