The Alliance Against Garbage Import (AAGI) has reacted to the scandal of 816 tons of toxic industrial waste, which are returning to Albania, after leaving the Port of Durr\u00ebs.<\/p>\n
In their statement, there is confirmation of their concern regarding the lack of relevant state infrastructure to stop and prevent the importation of waste for burial and disposal in addition to those destined for recycling.<\/span><\/p>\n AAGI also emphasizes in the statement the attitude of the Albanian authorities, which according to them leaves much to be desired, since the event has not yet been investigated by the prosecutors to reach clear conclusions about the origin of the remains.<\/span><\/p>\n FULL STATEMENT:<\/span><\/p>\n “AAGI notes that the scandal clearly confirms our main concern regarding the necessity to stop the import of garbage in Albania due to the lack of relevant state infrastructure to stop and prevent the import of garbage for burial and disposal in addition to those destined for recycling.<\/span><\/p>\n The scandal points out that the Albanian state authority is too incompetent or corrupt to hold local industrial companies accountable and hold them accountable for what they do with the waste, whether toxic or not, that comes out of their normal economic activity. <\/span><\/p>\n The scandal also points out that the reaction of the Albanian authorities to the scandal leaves much to be desired. So far, it does not seem that the relevant prosecutions have carried out any inspections on the subjects suspected of trafficking in dangerous substances, while the government has not deigned to investigate how it happened that we arrived at this scandal, nor who, among the state links, from the environmental inspectors to customs and Port of Durr\u00ebs inspectors failed to spot the problem in time.<\/span><\/p>\n Consequently, AAGI emphasizes that Albania should remain in the regime of banning the import of fertilizers and meanwhile, instead of wasting time in such absurd debates, as the interest of a few economic operators in importing fertilizers, should focus energies on integrated waste management, on source separation, on recycling, on the rehabilitation of polluted areas, on the extension of the collection system throughout the territory of the country, on ensuring that garbage is not dumped in unauthorized areas, in ensuring that all municipalities have transit stations and landfills and that as little of the waste we produce is destined for landfill.<\/span><\/p>\n In this context, AAGI calls on Albanians to get involved in our national campaign, which, this time, aims not only to ban the import of garbage, but also to clean Albania of garbage.”<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The Alliance Against Garbage Import (AAGI) has reacted to the scandal of 816 tons of toxic industrial waste, which are returning to Albania, after leaving the Port of Durr\u00ebs.
