In the region there have been harmful narratives that emphasize divisions, said the head of the European Union Office in Kosovo, Aivo Orav. He stressed that the EU is committed to building a media landscape that is strong, powerful and accountable.<\/p>\n
This was said at the opening of the European Union conference which is being held in Pristina for media education “Constructive Journalism: Empowerment of Informed and Resilient Societies”.<\/p>\n
The head of the European Union Office in Kosovo, Aivo Orav, stated that this conference is a proof of the commitment to face the most important issues for disinformation.<\/p>\n
“We have seen harmful narratives that highlight divisions and fuel them in the region but also further afield. For this reason, the European Union together with its partners is committed to building a media landscape that is strong, powerful and accountable. In the EU we have taken a comprehensive approach to combat disinformation. We keep our eyes open to such disinformation campaigns and ensure that false narratives are confronted with facts. We have held online portals accountable in order to create a safe digital space for all of us. Lack of transparency in media ownership, unregistered online media raise serious accountability concerns. Many journalists who work without genuine contracts, which in turn makes them susceptible to pressures and threats from media owners, which shakes the confidence of the media”, he said.<\/p>\n
He added that a recent study highlights the susceptibility to misinformation, including among journalism professionals.<\/p>\n
“This calls for media education programs and fact-checking systems. We must empower citizens through media education, in order to help everyone to be educated and informed informants”, he added.<\/p>\n
The Minister of Education, Arb\u00ebrie Nagavci emphasized that media education and the fight against misinformation is a phenomenon that Kosovo is facing every day.<\/p>\n
“Media education is integrated into our school curriculum, with the aim of correctly orienting children and immunizing them against potential and unethical manipulations. In this context, digitization is also among the optimal ways to address this issue. Therefore, in addition to addressing as an education strategy, we are finalizing the improvement of quality services in education, in accordance with the trends of digital education worldwide. We are currently creating the new digitization department, which will work towards the fulfillment of this objective, while within the framework of the fixed infrastructure, the extension of the fast network continues in the schools of Kosovo”, declared Nagavci.<\/p>\n
Nagavci emphasized that efforts are being made to introduce media education as a subject in schools in Kosovo.<\/p>\n
