The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said that he wants the Brussels Agreement reached last year with Serbia to be implemented first, and then the Washington one to be dealt with.<\/p>\n
Asked if the Washington Agreement – reached in 2020 at the White House – is acceptable to him now if the new American administration of Donald Trump insists on its implementation, Kurti said that he expects the other agreement, that of Brussels, to is signed.<\/p>\n
“I can be responsible for the agreements in which I participated and accepted and I expect the same from Belgrade, even though they suppress and do not respect this agreement. Let’s start with the last agreement, which is a comprehensive agreement, because it normalizes relations between Kosovo and Serbia through de facto recognition of each other”, said Kurti, after participating in an event in Pristina.<\/p>\n
Kosovo and Serbia agreed on the Agreement on the path towards the normalization of relations last year. The agreement has not been signed, but the European Union – which mediates the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia – insists that it is binding on the parties.<\/p>\n
The agreement of 11 articles, among other things, foresees a level of self-management for the Serbian community in Kosovo, mutual recognition of state symbols, that Serbia does not block Kosovo’s membership in international organizations, and asks Pristina and Belgrade to also implement all previous agreements reached during the dialogue.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Washington Agreement for economic normalization was reached in September 2020 between the USA and Kosovo and Serbia at the White House, in the presence of President Donald Trump. This agreement, which included the recognition of Kosovo’s independence from Israel, has not been fully implemented.<\/p>\n
Kurti said that there will be cooperation and communication with the new Trump administration.<\/p>\n
“Trump, in a letter sent to one of our predecessors, has also fundamentally established mutual recognition as something central to the future relations between Kosovo and Serbia, and we wish, we are ready to continue this cooperation, and why not expand and deepen this cooperation, which is expressed not only in the diplomatic aspect. However, the diplomatic aspect is one of the most important”, said Kurti.<\/p>\n
During Trump’s first term (2017-2020), Kurti clashed with the then US envoy for the Western Balkans region, Richard Grenell.<\/p>\n
Grenell, a close associate of Trump, had called Kurti “anti-American” and had accused him of opposing American policies suggested by former presidents Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Donald Trump.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Kurti had claimed that the American emissary had a hand in the overthrow of his first Government, in March 2020.<\/p>\n
