On January 8, the Kosovo Police closed the Tax Administration in North Mitrovica, which operated within the Serbian system, due to “illegal activities”, as well as the insurance company from Serbia – Dunav Osiguranje, due to suspicions that it was working without license.<\/p>\n
Serbian List announced that with the closure of the Tax Administration, 80 workers “remained on the streets”, and accused the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, of continuing the election campaign “at the expense of the Serbian people”, before the February 9 parliamentary elections.<\/p>\n
The deputy director of the Kosovo Police for the northern region, Veton Elshani, told Radio Free Europe that the guardian prosecutor was informed about the case of the Tax Administration and that the employees were allowed to take only their personal belongings.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, regarding the insurance company, he said that the police assisted the officials of the Central Bank of Kosovo in this action, and that the prosecutor described the case as “abuse of economic activity”.<\/p>\n
Dunav Osiguranje is a joint stock company from Serbia, which offers over 100 services in the field of life and property insurance. On its official website, the list of branch addresses includes the one in North Mitrovica, in the north of Kosovo.<\/p>\n
Their closure is a continuation of actions for the closure of Serbian institutions in Kosovo, which the official authorities of Pristina consider “illegal”.<\/p>\n
The Minister of Internal Affairs of Kosovo, Xhelal Svecla, has written on his Facebook profile that “the illegal activity of the Tax Agency of Serbia will be investigated by all our institutional mechanisms, while we will continue to fight any criminal parallelism of Serbia in front of our institutions”.<\/p>\n
“This institution has illegally collected financial resources from citizens and entities that live and operate in the Republic of Kosovo. Extortion is punishable and strictly prohibited for anyone who practices it,” he said.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, Serbian List announced that during the day it will talk with the employees of the Tax Administration and about the possibilities of help and support.<\/p>\n
“None of them will be left without wages and income and their existence will remain assured,” said the announcement of Serbian List, the largest party of Serbs in Kosovo, which has the support of Belgrade.<\/p>\n
Kosovo began closing Serbian institutions in January 2024 and so far a number of parallel Serbian municipalities in Dragash, Suhareka, Prizren, Rahovec, Peja, Istog, Klina, Skenderaj, North Mitrovica, Zve\u00e7an, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq have been closed.<\/p>\n
Also, the Post of Serbia in the north of Kosovo, the Treasury of the National Bank of Serbia in Leposavic, the Postal Savings Bank, the Office for Kosovo of the Government of Serbia, the Directorate of the Pension and Invalidity Insurance Fund, the Administrative District of Mitrovica of Kosovo and the Center for Social Work in Vushtrri, the Directorate of Urban Planning, the Directorate of Residential and Business Spaces and the Directorate for Building Land in North Mitrovica have also been closed.<\/p>\n
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107, in a public address in mid-September last year, said that with the closure of Serbian institutions in Kosovo, about 5,800 people have lost their jobs, but that they will continue to receive salary.<\/p>\n
Serbia refuses to extinguish its institutions for the territory of Kosovo and has moved most of them near the border points on the Serbian side.<\/p>\n
