This Sunday, <\/span>February 9, 2025<\/span>, the citizens of Kosovo have headed to the polls to elect the government and the prime minister who will lead the country for the next four years. But who are the four candidates for the position of Prime Minister of Kosovo?<\/span><\/p>\n

Albin Kurti \u2013 LVV Candidate Fighting for Another Term as Prime Minister<\/span><\/p>\n

Albin Kurti has already served twice as Prime Minister, with his first term being the shortest in Kosovo\u2019s history and his second the longest. He was born on <\/span>March 24, 1975, in Pristina<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kurti joined the leadership of the <\/span>Independent Student Union of the University of Pristina<\/span> in <\/span>August 1997<\/span>, organizing peaceful, non-violent protests for the liberation of university buildings occupied by Serbian regime authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the war in Kosovo began in <\/span>August 1998<\/span>, Kurti started working as the <\/span>Secretary of the Office of the Political Representative of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), Adem Dema\u00e7i<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was arrested by Serbian police on <\/span>April 27, 1999<\/span>. After Serbian forces withdrew from Kosovo on <\/span>June 10, 1999<\/span>, Kurti and over <\/span>2,000 other Albanians<\/span> were transferred to Serbian prisons. Due to international pressure, he was released on <\/span>December 7, 2001<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

On <\/span>April 23, 2003<\/span>, Kurti graduated from the <\/span>Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pristina<\/span>, specializing in <\/span>Computerized Telecommunications<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>June 2005<\/span>, Kurti, along with other activists, founded the <\/span>Vet\u00ebvendosje (Self-Determination) Movement<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He served as the <\/span>leader of Vet\u00ebvendosje<\/span> until <\/span>March 2015<\/span>, and in <\/span>January 2018<\/span>, he was re-elected as party leader.<\/span><\/p>\n

Between <\/span>2005 and 2017<\/span>, Kurti spent about <\/span>a year and a half in detention<\/span> due to opposition activism.<\/span><\/p>\n

He served as a <\/span>Member of Parliament<\/span> for Vet\u00ebvendosje in the Kosovo Assembly for <\/span>three consecutive terms<\/span> and chaired the <\/span>Foreign Affairs Committee<\/span> from <\/span>2011 to 2014<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the <\/span>2017, 2019, and 2021 elections<\/span>, Kurti was his party\u2019s candidate for prime minister.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the elections held on <\/span>February 14, 2021<\/span>, the <\/span>Vet\u00ebvendosje list won 50.28% of the popular vote<\/span>, marking the <\/span>best result ever achieved by a political party<\/span> in Kosovo since the war ended.<\/span><\/p>\n

He is fluent in <\/span>Albanian, English, and Serbo-Croatian<\/span>. He is married and has a daughter, <\/span>Lea<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bedri Hamza \u2013 PDK Candidate for Prime Minister<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Bedri Hamza<\/span> was born on <\/span>November 8, 1963, in Upper Klin\u00eb<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He graduated from the <\/span>Faculty of Economics at the University of Pristina in 1987<\/span>, holds a <\/span>Master\u2019s degree in Economics<\/span>, and is a <\/span>PhD candidate at the University of Tirana<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hamza has held various <\/span>government positions<\/span>, including:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 <\/span>Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance<\/span>(2008-2011)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 <\/span>Minister of Finance<\/span>(2011-2013)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 <\/span>Governor of the Central Bank of Kosovo<\/span>(2013-2017)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 <\/span>Minister of Finance<\/span>(2017-2020)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 <\/span>Member of the Kosovo Parliament<\/span>(2020)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 <\/span>Head of the Parliamentary Group and Chairman of the Committee for Oversight of Public Finances<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 <\/span>Vice President of the Assembly of Kosovo<\/span>(February 2021 – October 2021)<\/span><\/p>\n

After winning the <\/span>mayoral election in October 2021<\/span>, he resigned from his parliamentary mandate and assumed office as <\/span>Mayor of Mitrovica on November 26, 2021<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lumir Abdixhiku \u2013 LDK Leader Facing His First General Election<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Lumir Abdixhiku<\/span> was born on <\/span>April 22, 1983, in Pristina<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He completed his secondary education at <\/span>Xhevdet Doda High School in Pristina<\/span> and graduated in <\/span>2004 from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Pristina<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

From <\/span>2005 to 2006<\/span>, he studied in the <\/span>United Kingdom<\/span>, earning a <\/span>Master\u2019s degree from Staffordshire University<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>2009<\/span>, he received a <\/span>scholarship from Staffordshire University<\/span> for <\/span>PhD studies<\/span>, and in <\/span>2013<\/span>, he earned a <\/span>Doctorate in Economics<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abdixhiku joined the <\/span>Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) in 2017<\/span> and was one of the <\/span>most voted MPs in that year\u2019s elections<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>2019<\/span>, he was elected as a <\/span>member of LDK\u2019s leadership<\/span>, and in <\/span>2020<\/span>, he served as <\/span>Minister of Infrastructure and Environment<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

On <\/span>March 14, 2021<\/span>, he was elected <\/span>leader of LDK<\/span>, and on <\/span>November 19, 2023<\/span>, he was re-elected.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is <\/span>his first term as Mayor of Mitrovica<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He is fluent in <\/span>English and Serbo-Croatian<\/span>. He lives in <\/span>Mitrovica<\/span>, is <\/span>married<\/span>, and has <\/span>three children<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ramush Haradinaj \u2013 AAK Candidate for Prime Minister<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ramush Haradinaj<\/span> was born on <\/span>July 3, 1968, in the village of Gllogjan, near De\u00e7an<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He has <\/span>served twice as Prime Minister of Kosovo<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

After completing <\/span>high school in 1987<\/span>, he <\/span>served in the Yugoslav People\u2019s Army<\/span>, where he was later promoted to <\/span>platoon commander<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Haradinaj lived abroad for several years, mainly in <\/span>Switzerland<\/span>, where he learned <\/span>French and English<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the Kosovo war, <\/span>he was a commander in the Dukagjin Operational Zone of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA)<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

After the war, Haradinaj studied <\/span>Law at the University of Pristina<\/span> and earned a <\/span>Master\u2019s degree in Business from the American University of Kosovo<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the transformation of the <\/span>KLA into the Kosovo Protection Corps (KPC)<\/span>, he was appointed <\/span>Deputy Commander<\/span>. In <\/span>April 2000<\/span>, he left military life and founded the <\/span>Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK)<\/span>, where he remains the party leader.<\/span><\/p>\n

After the <\/span>2004 elections<\/span>, <\/span>AAK entered a coalition with LDK<\/span>, and Haradinaj became <\/span>Prime Minister of Kosovo<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, after <\/span>100 days in office<\/span>, he <\/span>resigned due to an indictment from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)<\/span>. He was later <\/span>acquitted of all charges<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

On <\/span>September 9, 2017<\/span>, he was <\/span>elected Prime Minister again<\/span>, but after <\/span>22 months in office<\/span>, he <\/span>resigned<\/span> when summoned as a witness by the <\/span>Hague Tribunal<\/span>. He stated that he <\/span>did not want to appear in court wearing Kosovo\u2019s official prime ministerial suit<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He is remembered for making <\/span>strong decisions against Serbia<\/span>, including imposing a <\/span>100% tariff on Serbian and Bosnian goods<\/span>, despite heavy pressure from the <\/span>EU and the US<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even in his <\/span>resignation speech<\/span>, Haradinaj expressed his strong stance, stating:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy country is Kosovo, inviolable in its multi-ethnicity, multilingualism, territory, and borders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He is married to <\/span>Anita Haradinaj<\/span> and has <\/span>three children<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
