Candidate Profiles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">This Sunday, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">February 9, 2025<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, the citizens of Kosovo have headed to the polls to elect the government and the prime minister who will lead the country for the next four years. But who are the four candidates for the position of Prime Minister of Kosovo?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Albin Kurti \u2013 LVV Candidate Fighting for Another Term as Prime Minister<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Albin Kurti has already served twice as Prime Minister, with his first term being the shortest in Kosovo\u2019s history and his second the longest. He was born on <\/span><span class=\"s1\">March 24, 1975, in Pristina<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Kurti joined the leadership of the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Independent Student Union of the University of Pristina<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> in <\/span><span class=\"s1\">August 1997<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, organizing peaceful, non-violent protests for the liberation of university buildings occupied by Serbian regime authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">When the war in Kosovo began in <\/span><span class=\"s1\">August 1998<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, Kurti started working as the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Secretary of the Office of the Political Representative of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), Adem Dema\u00e7i<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">He was arrested by Serbian police on <\/span><span class=\"s1\">April 27, 1999<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. After Serbian forces withdrew from Kosovo on <\/span><span class=\"s1\">June 10, 1999<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, Kurti and over <\/span><span class=\"s1\">2,000 other Albanians<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> were transferred to Serbian prisons. Due to international pressure, he was released on <\/span><span class=\"s1\">December 7, 2001<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">On <\/span><span class=\"s1\">April 23, 2003<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, Kurti graduated from the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pristina<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, specializing in <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Computerized Telecommunications<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">In <\/span><span class=\"s1\">June 2005<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, Kurti, along with other activists, founded the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Vet\u00ebvendosje (Self-Determination) Movement<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">He served as the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">leader of Vet\u00ebvendosje<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> until <\/span><span class=\"s1\">March 2015<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, and in <\/span><span class=\"s1\">January 2018<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, he was re-elected as party leader.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Between <\/span><span class=\"s1\">2005 and 2017<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, Kurti spent about <\/span><span class=\"s1\">a year and a half in detention<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> due to opposition activism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">He served as a <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Member of Parliament<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> for Vet\u00ebvendosje in the Kosovo Assembly for <\/span><span class=\"s1\">three consecutive terms<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and chaired the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Foreign Affairs Committee<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> from <\/span><span class=\"s1\">2011 to 2014<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">In the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">2017, 2019, and 2021 elections<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, Kurti was his party\u2019s candidate for prime minister.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">In the elections held on <\/span><span class=\"s1\">February 14, 2021<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Vet\u00ebvendosje list won 50.28% of the popular vote<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, marking the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">best result ever achieved by a political party<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> in Kosovo since the war ended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">He is fluent in <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Albanian, English, and Serbo-Croatian<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. In <\/span><span class=\"s1\">April 2000<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, he left military life and founded the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK)<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, where he remains the party leader.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">After the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">2004 elections<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">AAK entered a coalition with LDK<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, and Haradinaj became <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Prime Minister of Kosovo<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">However, after <\/span><span class=\"s1\">100 days in office<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, he <\/span><span class=\"s1\">resigned due to an indictment from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. He was later <\/span><span class=\"s1\">acquitted of all charges<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">On <\/span><span class=\"s1\">September 9, 2017<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, he was <\/span><span class=\"s1\">elected Prime Minister again<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, but after <\/span><span class=\"s1\">22 months in office<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, he <\/span><span class=\"s1\">resigned<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> when summoned as a witness by the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Hague Tribunal<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.
