North Macedonia is experiencing its most difficult period of the year in terms of flu infections. Over the past seven days, 2,880 cases of seasonal viruses have been reported, primarily affecting individuals aged 15 to 64. Children have also been affected, with some requiring hospitalization due to severe health conditions.<\/p>\n

Flu Statistics and Trends<\/h3>\n

A total of 2,880 flu cases were recorded in one week, marking a 5.1% decrease compared to the first week of February, but a 53.6% increase compared to the same period last year.<\/p>\n

According to Dr. Marija Andonovska, Director of the Institute for Public Health, the most affected group is ages 15-64, with 1,552 registered cases. Other affected age groups include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • 685 cases among children aged 5-14<\/li>\n
  • 317 cases in children under 4 years old<\/li>\n
  • 272 cases in individuals 65 years and older<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    “We are seeing an increase in cases of flu-like viruses. The results show widespread geographical transmission, with positive test rates exceeding 10% for five consecutive weeks. Currently, North Macedonia has a high intensity of flu virus circulation for this time of the year,”<\/em> said Dr. Marija Andonovska.<\/p>\n

    Hospitals Struggling with High Patient Numbers<\/h3>\n

    At the Respiratory Disease Clinic, over 220 children per day are seeking medical assistance.<\/p>\n

    “Based on our analyses, it is clearly influenza. Patients arrive with fever, fatigue, and respiratory issues, which, in cases of complications, lead to pneumonia, requiring hospitalization. Currently, we have nine hospitalized children with influenza. Additionally, infants with RSV virus are also being hospitalized due to the risk of complications,”<\/em> stated Dr. Katerina Boshkova, Director of Kozle Hospital.<\/p>\n

    Most Affected Cities<\/h3>\n
      \n
    • Skopje: 692 cases<\/li>\n
    • Strumica: 333 cases<\/li>\n
    • Bitola: 304 cases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Other cities report lower numbers. In total, 11,614 flu cases have been recorded across North Macedonia during the 2024\/2025 season.<\/p>\n

      Health Recommendations<\/h3>\n

      The Institute for Public Health has issued the following guidelines to prevent flu spread:<\/p>\n

      • Avoid crowded places and large gatherings<\/li>\n
      • Maintain distance from infected individuals<\/li>\n
      • Follow hygiene measures and use masks when necessary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
