Euronews Albania<\/span> has obtained the list of 26 political parties that have submitted their registration requests to the <\/span>Central Election Commission (CEC)<\/span> for the <\/span>May 11, 2025,<\/span> parliamentary elections in Albania.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among these parties are the three major ones: the <\/span>Socialist Party (PS), the Democratic Party of Albania (PDSH\/PD),<\/span> and the <\/span>Freedom Party (PL).<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the absence of <\/span>Lulzim Basha\u2019s Euro-Atlantic Democrats<\/span> and <\/span>Enkelejd Alibeaj\u2019s \u201cDjathtas 1912\u201d<\/span> party is notable.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Albania\u2019s <\/span>Electoral Code<\/span>, every political party must submit a registration request to the <\/span>CEC<\/span> no later than <\/span>70 days before election day.<\/span><\/p>\n

This request must include information about the <\/span>party leader authorized to present candidates, the official party name and acronym, a specimen of the official seal, and contact details for the financial and communication officers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Coalition Rules and Deadlines<\/span><\/p>\n

Registered parties have the opportunity to form <\/span>coalitions,<\/span> which must be registered with the <\/span>CEC<\/span> at least 60 days before the elections.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 A party that is part of a <\/span>coalition cannot join another coalition<\/span>or submit independent candidates.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 The <\/span>coalition must appoint a leading party<\/span>responsible for legal obligations under the electoral code.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 The coalition agreement must be formally documented and submitted to the <\/span>CEC.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 <\/span>Multi-member candidate lists must be submitted no later than 50 days before the elections.<\/span><\/p>\n

Political Developments Ahead of Elections<\/span><\/p>\n

On <\/span>September 24, 2024<\/span>, representatives of the <\/span>Democratic Party<\/span> began <\/span>consultations with allies<\/span>for the upcoming elections. The first meeting was with <\/span>Ilir Meta<\/span> from the <\/span>Freedom Party.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meta did not take a clear stance on whether he would run with a <\/span>joint electoral list<\/span> or separately but expressed a preference for using his party\u2019s <\/span>logo.<\/span><\/p>\n

On <\/span>November 14, 2024<\/span>, <\/span>Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha,<\/span> who has been under <\/span>house arrest since December 2023,<\/span> addressed concerns regarding Meta\u2019s inclusion in the electoral list despite <\/span>Meta\u2019s imprisonment in October 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n
