The story of Russian women who married Albanian men, leaving their homeland for love only to end up persecuted by the Albanian communist regime, will be at the center of the documentary “For the Sake of Love”<\/em>, which will premiere at “Days of Remembrance 2025.”<\/em><\/p>\n

This documentary, directed by Rezart Shehu and written by Blerina Gjoka, brings forth the harrowing testimonies of Russian women who, driven by love and the hope for a better life in Albania, endured a terrifying period under a ruthless regime.<\/p>\n

They were imprisoned, separated from their families, and subjected to political persecution, adding yet another layer of suffering caused by communism.<\/p>\n

A Story of Love and Sacrifice<\/h3>\n

One of the documentary\u2019s protagonists is Elena \u00c7ami, who recalls with emotion the early moments of love with an Albanian man, a relationship that, after many challenges and sacrifices, led her to Albania to start a new life.<\/p>\n

“I was born in Moscow in 1932, finished high school, then went to university, graduated in 1955, and came to Albania,”<\/em> recounts Elena \u00c7ami, as she revisits the complicated times she endured in Albania.<\/p>\n

Amidst the Cold War and heightened political tensions, many Russian women fell in love with Albanian men\u2014a phenomenon that often reflected genuine affection but struggled to survive under the pressure of a strict state.<\/p>\n

This documentary explores the sensitivity and complexities they faced, balancing their love for another with a regime that disregarded all personal sentiments.<\/p>\n

Screenwriter Blerina Gjoka on the Challenges of the Project<\/h3>\n

Screenwriter Blerina Gjoka, who meticulously led this project, explains the difficulties of finding authentic testimonies from this dark period.<\/p>\n

“It was an extremely challenging task because we were dealing with the 1950s-1960s, and I had my doubts about finding living witnesses. But luck was on my side, and I managed to find two Russian women who are still alive,”<\/em> says Gjoka, who, after extensive efforts and research, was able to bring forth the stories of those who suffered the harshest consequences of the regime.<\/p>\n

Support from KAS and Kujto.al<\/h3>\n

The documentary “For the Sake of Love”<\/em> is supported by KAS and Kujto.al, two institutions dedicated to preserving and remembering the stories of those persecuted under the communist regime.<\/p>\n

Agron Shehaj, the founder of Kujto.al, expressed that this project is one of the most significant efforts to maintain historical memory and honor the victims of communism.<\/p>\n

“This is one of the things that makes me most proud because the issue of remembering the crimes of communism has been one of the most ignored topics in Albania,”<\/em> says Shehaj.<\/p>\n

Imprisoned for Love<\/h3>\n

Another aspect of the documentary is the destruction of these women\u2019s lives\u2014not only were they persecuted for their international relationships, but they were also forced to endure a system that tolerated no “suspicious” ties to foreigners.<\/p>\n

Many were imprisoned, separated from their families, and spent years under pressure and torture.<\/p>\n

One of the most heartbreaking accounts is that of Valentina Buci, who recalls how she first met her Albanian love, Pandi, in 1958 when Albanian students arrived in Moscow.<\/p>\n

“In 1958, students from Albania came to study. Pandi managed to approach me and asked if we could dance. That\u2019s how we started going out together. We went everywhere together,”<\/em> Valentina recalls, describing a love story that began in an unimaginable time and place, only to lead to a life filled with sacrifice and hardship.<\/p>\n

A Reflection on a Forgotten History<\/h3>\n

“For the Sake of Love”<\/em> is a crucial documentary that brings attention to the story of a group of women who saw love as an opportunity to build a better future but, unfortunately, became victims of a brutal regime that viewed everything as a threat to its power.<\/p>\n
