Members of the European Parliament have adopted a report on Kosovo that encourages the country to implement reforms in order to progress toward European Union membership, while also urging Pristina and Belgrade to open a new chapter in normalization talks.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is clear that Kosovo\u2019s integration process needs a new momentum \u2014 we need a new chapter in the dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade. It is extremely positive that all major political parties in Kosovo strongly support EU integration. Kosovo\u2019s future lies within the European family, and we will work together on the reform agenda because any future accession must be merit-based,\u201d said Riho Terras, the EP rapporteur for Kosovo.<\/p>\n
According to the MEPs, the dialogue aimed at normalizing relations between Kosovo and Serbia \u201chas unfortunately not produced the expected results.\u201d They called on both parties to implement the Brussels and Ohrid agreements, including the establishment of the Association of Serb-majority municipalities, and urged Serbia not to oppose Kosovo\u2019s membership in regional and international organizations.<\/p>\n
Due to crises in northern Kosovo, which heightened tensions between the two countries, no rounds of political dialogue have been held in Brussels since September 2023 \u2014 only technical-level negotiations between chief negotiators have taken place.<\/p>\n
The EU has repeatedly emphasized that normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia is a prerequisite for both countries on their paths toward European integration.<\/p>\n
Recently, the EU\u2019s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, stated that Brussels is reviewing mistakes made in the dialogue process, which began in 2011.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
