The 108th edition of the iconic cycling event began with the <em data-start=\"213\" data-end=\"232\">\u201cGrande Partenza\u201d<\/em>, with the first three stages scheduled to take place in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"303\" data-end=\"381\">Stage One, held today, was a 160-kilometer race from Durr\u00ebs to Tirana.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"383\" data-end=\"692\">Danish cyclist Mads Pedersen claimed victory in the opening stage, crossing the finish line in 3 hours, 36 minutes, and 14 seconds, and earning the coveted maglia rosa (pink jersey).<br data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"580\" \/>The winner was determined by a photo finish, with Pedersen beating Wout van Aert by just 0.04 seconds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"694\" data-end=\"828\">Following Pedersen and van Aert, other top finishers included Orluis Aular, Francesco Busatto, Thomas Pidcock, and others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"830\" data-end=\"1105\">The race was not without incident. In the final kilometers, near the Fresku area, several cyclists were involved in a crash. One of the favorites, Mikel Landa, had to be stretchered off for medical assistance and is expected to require specialized hospital treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1107\" data-end=\"1389\">The stage began in Durr\u00ebs at around 1:00 PM. After 65 kilometers of flat terrain, riders faced the climbs of Gracen and Surrel, where inclines reached up to 13%.<br data-start=\"1280\" data-end=\"1283\" \/>The final portion featured a steep descent from Surrel and a flat sprint to the finish line in Tirana.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1391\" data-end=\"1552\">After 160 kilometers, the cyclists crossed the \u201cD\u00ebshmor\u00ebt e Kombit\u201d Boulevard, concluding the stage at 5:12 PM, in front of the Palace of Congresses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1554\" data-end=\"1794\">The Giro continues on Saturday with Stage Two, a time trial in Tirana.<br data-start=\"1632\" data-end=\"1635\" \/>Then on May 11, Stage Three will take place in Vlor\u00eb, expected to be one of the toughest stages due to the climb up the legendary Llogara Pass.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"flex justify-start\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"mt-3 w-full empty:hidden\">\n<div class=\"text-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"absolute\">\n<div class=\"flex items-center justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<div class=\"pointer-events-none h-px w-px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-edge=\"true\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time in history, the Giro d\u2019Italia kicked off from Albania.
