Kosovo\u2019s President Vjosa Osmani met on Monday with the leader of the Social Democratic Initiative (Nisma), Fatmir Limaj, as part of her ongoing political consultations aimed at resolving the deadlock in the Assembly of Kosovo, which remains unconstituted three months after the elections.<\/p>\n
In a brief statement on Facebook, the Presidency said the meeting followed a request from Nisma for a consultation.<\/p>\n
No further details were provided about the meeting, and Limaj has not yet commented on the discussion.<\/p>\n
Nisma secured three seats in the Assembly during the February 9 elections, running in a coalition with the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK).<\/p>\n
The meeting between Osmani and Limaj came just hours after lawmakers failed for the 18th time to constitute the Assembly.<\/p>\n
On Monday, MPs once again refused\u2014this time for the tenth consecutive session\u2014to form a commission that would oversee a secret ballot to elect the new Speaker of Parliament.<\/p>\n
The issue of the secret vote\u2014first proposed on May 1 by session chair Avni Dehari after Vet\u00ebvendosje\u2019s nominee Albulena Haxhiu failed several times to secure the 61 votes required for election\u2014has now been sent to the Constitutional Court of Kosovo by opposition parties from the previous legislature.<\/p>\n
These parties argue that Vet\u00ebvendosje\u2019s attempt to elect the Speaker via secret ballot is unconstitutional and have asked the Court to impose a \u201ctemporary measure suspending parliamentary sessions until this matter is reviewed and a decision is made.\u201d<\/p>\n
Haxhiu is considered a \u201cdivisive figure\u201d by the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and AAK, while the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) has stated it will not support any Vet\u00ebvendosje candidate for Speaker.<\/p>\n
Vet\u00ebvendosje insists that Haxhiu deserves to be elected and, while expressing willingness to reach a political agreement, has ruled out nominating anyone else for the position.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
