Serbia\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed concern over recent statements from Montenegro regarding its support for Kosovo\u2019s independence and active lobbying for Pristina\u2019s membership in international organizations.<\/p>\n
A day earlier, Montenegro\u2019s Foreign Minister, Ervin Ibrahimovi\u0107, stated in an interview with Montenegro\u2019s national broadcaster RTV that he would support Kosovo\u2019s accession to international organizations.<\/p>\n
\u201cMontenegro will offer clear support when the question arises of whether Kosovo should be part of the European Union or the Council of Europe,\u201d Ibrahimovi\u0107 declared.<\/p>\n
Although some parties within Montenegro\u2019s ruling coalition do not recognize Kosovo\u2019s independence, Ibrahimovi\u0107 said he believes this position will not jeopardize the coalition, citing Montenegro\u2019s clear foreign policy priorities.
One of these priorities, he noted, is maintaining good neighborly relations.<\/p>\n
\u201cMontenegro is recognized by international partners as a country that fosters good neighborly relations. Therefore, we will support our friendly state, Kosovo, because it is a foreign policy priority for it to become the next member of the European Union\u2014and this does not contradict our positions,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Serbia\u2019s Foreign Ministry described Montenegro\u2019s remarks as \u201ccontrary to international law and the UN Charter, as well as to the principles of good neighborly relations.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a statement, the ministry urged neighboring countries\u2014including Montenegro\u2014to refrain from actions or statements that might \u201cescalate tensions\u201d and instead work to strengthen mutual trust.<\/p>\n
