A spokesperson for the European Union stated on Friday that any decision regarding construction along the Iber River\u2014which divides Mitrovica into the Albanian-majority south and Serb-majority north\u2014must be made carefully and inclusively, with the full involvement of all affected communities.<\/p>\n

Kosovar authorities plan to build two new bridges on either side of the main Ibar bridge.<\/p>\n

The Vet\u00ebvendosje Movement, led by acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, released a photo on Thursday showing a visual representation of the proposed bridges. According to the image, the new structures would be built to the left and right of the existing main bridge, which is part of the Kosovo\u2013Serbia agreement on freedom of movement, reached in Brussels as part of the dialogue to normalize relations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe EU is not aware of this project and is not involved in it,\u201d the EU spokesperson told Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty.<\/p>\n

The construction of the two new bridges is based on a memorandum of cooperation signed between Kosovo’s Ministry of Infrastructure and the municipalities of North and South Mitrovica.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Acting Minister of Infrastructure Liburn Aliu announced the signing of the memorandum supporting infrastructure projects. The agreement was signed with North Mitrovica Mayor Erden Atiq and South Mitrovica Deputy Mayor Ariana Tahiri, in the presence of the Minister of Local Government Administration, Elbert Krasniqi.<\/p>\n

Aliu stated that the goal is to create \u201ca more connected, functional, and improved city for all its citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
