The U.S. Embassy in Tirana has shared a social media post emphasizing the impact of investing 5% of the Gross Domestic Product in defense. As the two-day NATO summit unfolds in The Hague, the Embassy states that, under the leadership of President Donald Trump, the 32 allies are expected to make significant and far-reaching decisions.<\/p>\n

The post highlights that the 5% investment in defense will have implications beyond the military sector.<\/p>\n

The two-day NATO summit in The Hague began today and aims to send a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that the Alliance remains united\u2014despite past criticisms by President Trump\u2014and determined to expand and strengthen its defense to deter any aggression from Moscow.<\/p>\n

The summit and its final declaration are expected to be brief and focused, particularly on Trump\u2019s call for NATO members to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP\u2014a sharp increase from the current benchmark of 2%.<\/p>\n

European allies should not worry about the U.S. commitment to NATO, said NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Tuesday, ahead of the summit where the new spending target is expected to be approved.<\/p>\n

Rutte described the issue of defense spending as a long-standing obstacle and source of frustration, noting that European and Canadian members are still not spending enough and that the U.S. expects them to match its level of investment.<\/p>\n
