In a joint statement, the EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and the Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos expressed their position following the conclusion of the parliamentary elections held on December 28.<\/p>\n
They conveyed the European Union\u2019s call for the swift formation of institutions, while assessing that the electoral process reflected democracy in the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cFollowing the political deadlock after the February 2025 elections, we expect the rapid formation of the Assembly and the new Government and the continuation of our engagement with the authorities. The new Government must step up efforts on the necessary EU-related reforms. The European Union values the active participation of all communities and their political parties in the elections. The electoral process demonstrated a strong commitment to democratic principles.\u201d<\/p>\n
Regarding Kosovo\u2013Serbia relations, the European Union states that this remains a process that must be taken forward toward normalization.<\/p>\n
\u201cNormalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, facilitated by the EU, continues to be the only way for both countries to make progress on their European paths. We expect all obligations arising from the Agreement on the Path to Normalization, as well as all previous Dialogue agreements, to be implemented without delay or further conditions. The EU is ready to organize a high-level meeting as soon as conditions allow.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to the statement, the European Union has deployed an Election Expert Mission (EEM), which will remain in Kosovo to monitor post-election procedures.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe call on the Assembly, once constituted, to ratify the agreements related to the Growth Plan. The Growth Plan for the Western Balkans is a time-bound instrument approved for the period 2024\u20132027, and it is in Kosovo\u2019s interest that ratification takes place as soon as possible in order to benefit from all opportunities under the Growth Plan, for the good of its population,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n
The EU recalls that the lifting of measures against Kosovo has begun, while the goal of further releasing funds continues.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo recall, the EU is moving forward with lifting measures against Kosovo. EUR 216 million in financial assistance has already been released following the regular transfer of local power after the last local elections.
