{"id":82484,"date":"2026-01-24T15:22:31","date_gmt":"2026-01-24T14:22:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/?p=82484"},"modified":"2026-01-24T17:53:37","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T16:53:37","slug":"historic-golike-bridge-left-unprotected-and-unrestored-facing-real-risk-of-destruction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/euronews.al\/en\/historic-golike-bridge-left-unprotected-and-unrestored-facing-real-risk-of-destruction\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic Golik\u00eb Bridge Left Unprotected and Unrestored, Facing Real Risk of Destruction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Golik\u00eb Bridge, a Category I Cultural Monument built at the end of the 17th century, is currently facing a real risk of destruction.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most important works of cultural heritage in the Mokra region, historically linked to a branch of the ancient Via Egnatia, the bridge is being continuously damaged by illegal excavations.<\/p>\n<p>For years, the bridge has fallen prey to gold seekers and illegal artifact hunters, who repeatedly interfere with its structure and body, seriously undermining the monument\u2019s stability.<\/p>\n<p>Such damage has also been documented recently, but the perpetrators remain unidentified, as the excavations are carried out during nighttime hours. The consequences are clearly visible: cavities in the foundations, cracks in the bridge structure, and partial collapse of the binding material\u2014damage that poses a serious risk.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to criminal interference, atmospheric factors have also played a significant role. More than 300 years of exposure to rainfall, frost, and erosion have accelerated the bridge\u2019s degradation, making intervention by responsible institutions an urgent necessity.<\/p>\n<p>Under these circumstances, local residents and municipal leaders are calling for immediate action from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture through a serious restoration and rehabilitation project.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is not isolated. Like the Golik\u00eb Bridge, the monumental tombs of Selc\u00eb, located just a few kilometers away\u2014another archaeological site of exceptional importance\u2014also suffer from almost non-existent levels of security and protection.<\/p>\n<p>This situation has facilitated looters, who excavate without any obstacles, destroying irreplaceable cultural heritage assets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Golik\u00eb Bridge, a Category I Cultural Monument built at the end of the 17th century, is currently facing a real risk of destruction.
