The European Union Ambassador to Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, has stated that Electoral Reform must meet citizens\u2019 expectations and international standards. During his remarks at a joint roundtable on Electoral Reform, Gonzato said that an important element of this reform is the need for political dialogue between the parties.<\/p>\n
At the end of his speech, Gonzato emphasized that the law on party financing must guarantee a level playing field for all actors and must also protect smaller parties.<\/p>\n

Improving the rule of law and maintaining an unwavering commitment to European standards is key for Albania, particularly in aligning with the interim benchmarks. That is why we have this timeframe and pressure for the commission. Electoral reform is a democratic necessity; trust in elections means trust in democracy. This trust cannot exist when funding sources are unclear or oversight is weak. Party financing is a prerequisite for the EU accession process. Electoral reform remains a decisive priority within the EU framework and is closely linked to the fundamentals.<\/p>\n
The reform must guarantee political pluralism and ensure a level playing field for all actors. The legal framework must secure fair competition and protect smaller actors. The OSCE\/ODIHR report referred to the ruling party benefiting from administrative resources. This is a key point that must be addressed.
