The European Union Ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, during a meeting with Prime Minister Edi Rama and representatives of the food business sector, stated that food safety is an important area for Albania\u2019s progress toward the EU, as it is directly linked to access to the European market.<\/p>\n
He underlined that Albania has entered a decisive phase of EU negotiations and that this sector remains one of the most complex in the integration process, emphasizing that progress must now be measured through systems aligned with EU standards and effective inspections based on risk assessment.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlbania has entered this decisive phase of negotiations. Progress is no longer measured by intentions or the adoption of legislation, but by functioning systems. It is based on accredited laboratories and on having food business operators that meet EU standards. Proper categorization of food business operators and the improvement of relevant entities in line with the EU are essential. This is a defining moment for the sector, as a well-functioning categorization system enables authorities to distinguish those who meet standards, those who can achieve compliance, and those requiring fundamental adjustments.<\/p>\n
Due to the importance of the dairy sector and audit findings on the low quality of raw milk, improving quality is a prerequisite for accessing the EU market. Alignment with EU standards opens the door to one of the largest markets in the world, strengthens reputation, and increases export opportunities. It requires strict hygiene practices, investment in equipment, and high traceability.<\/p>\n
We, the EU, are committed to supporting Albania, and for this purpose we have provided \u20ac12.5 million through the EU food safety project. We view EU integration as a joint effort. Albania has made significant progress, but the next steps will be decisive.
