Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti spoke this Thursday during a press conference about the creation of Kosovo\u2019s gendarmerie. During his remarks, Kurti stated that the gendarmerie will be responsible for securing Kosovo\u2019s land, water, and air borders.<\/p>\n
He added that the gendarmerie will also be tasked with preventing cross-border smuggling of goods and migrants, managing high-risk situations, and protecting critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn order to address these challenges and confront them, the establishment of the gendarmerie as a new and disciplined structure is a necessity of our time, one that will fill the gap between the Kosovo Police and the Kosovo Army. The gendarmerie will have a clear mandate: securing the land, water, and air borders throughout the territory of the Republic of Kosovo.<\/p>\n
It will conduct operations against terrorist and armed groups, including those with paramilitary characteristics. It will work to prevent all forms of cross-border smuggling, including goods and migrants, manage high-risk situations, and ensure the protection of critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n
The establishment and operationalization of the gendarmerie will be carried out through the approval of a special law in the Assembly of Kosovo during the 11th legislature, which will emerge after the snap elections on June 7,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Kurti also stated that the security situation globally and in Kosovo is evolving rapidly.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe threats we face today are not the same as those of a decade ago. The main challenges we have faced in recent years include armed attacks with military ammunition and superior capabilities.<\/p>\n
There has also been continuous smuggling of weapons and goods that undermine public security along the green border line. Furthermore, there has been organized infiltration by armed groups that threaten our sovereignty,\u201d Kurti added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
