Albania’s High Prosecutorial Council<\/span><\/span> (HPC) has launched the administrative procedure for selecting candidates for the country’s next Prosecutor General, issuing a public call for applications during its plenary session on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Under Albanian law, the Prosecutor General is elected by Parliament with a three-fifths majority of all MPs from a list of candidates proposed by the High Prosecutorial Council. The position carries a single seven-year, non-renewable mandate. The current Prosecutor General, Olsian \u00c7ela<\/span><\/span>, is due to complete his term on 5 December 2026.<\/p>\n

Interested candidates have 30 days from the date of the public announcement to submit their applications.<\/p>\n

In accordance with Law No. 97\/2016 on the organisation and functioning of the Prosecution Office in Albania, applicants must:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Have at least 15 years of distinguished legal experience;<\/li>\n
  • Be graduates of the School of Magistrates or hold an advanced academic degree in law;<\/li>\n
  • Not have reached the statutory retirement age;<\/li>\n
  • Not have held political office in the public administration during the past 10 years;<\/li>\n
  • Not have served in leadership positions within political parties during the past 10 years;<\/li>\n
  • Not have been members, collaborators or beneficiaries of the former State Security service before 2 July 1991;<\/li>\n
  • Not have been convicted by a final court decision of a criminal offence;<\/li>\n
  • Not have served as collaborators, informants or agents of intelligence services;<\/li>\n
  • Not be subject to any active disciplinary sanctions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Following the application deadline, the High Prosecutorial Council will verify candidates’ documentation, assess their qualifications and continue the selection process in accordance with the Constitution, relevant legislation and the Council’s rules of procedure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
