Twenty-four air traffic control employees of \u2018Albcontrol\u2019 have been taken to the police station following their decision on Wednesday to suspend their work at the Tirana International Airport. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sources close to Euronews Albania say that most of them are being held inside the premises of the State Police General Directorate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of the air traffic controllers were notified by phone and voluntarily went to the police station, while the others were escorted by police forces after midnight from a hotel near the airport, where they were staying since Tuesday afternoon. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Tirana Prosecutor\u2019s Office has launched investigations regarding the organized walkout, which resulted in dozens of canceled flights at the country\u2019s one international airport. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sixty-eight air traffic controllers went on a strike on Wednesday over their salaries which they claim have been cut by more than a half over the past year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, said during an interview for Euronews Albania that this strike is illegal, as air traffic control is considered as a vital sector. <\/span><\/p>\n

Currently the Control Tower is under the supervision of the army.<\/span><\/p>\n
