The Balkans are controlled by the organized crime. That was the declaration of the Director of the Institute of International Relations in Kosovo and security expert, Bedri Elezi in an interview to Euronews Albania.

Elezi emphasized that criminal groups have had extraordinary influence in the region and especially in Serbia. According to him, there have been times when Serbian President, Alexandar Vučić has felt threatened.

“Besides Serbian criminal groups, there are also Russian criminal groups with very strong influence in the region, especially in Kosovo. There have been times when Vučić and others have felt threatened by these groups. The Balkans are in a serious situation regarding organized crime. But at this point, no country, not even Kosovo or Albania, are in the same level as Serbia. This is the reason why the EU hesitates in accepting us as members, because some of our people are involved in dangerous activities in Europe and in the world,” said Elezi.

The security expert went as far as saying that these criminal structures also influence the social lives of the citizens.
