The Librazhd–Përrenjas road, which has been blocked for 11 days, is expected to reopen tomorrow. The announcement was made by the head of the Albanian Road Authority (ARRSH), Ami Kozeli.
In a statement to the media, Kozeli said that the new alternative section of the Librazhd–Përrenjas road will have a width of 9 meters.
“The road will reopen starting tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. During this period, the measures adopted by the technical council to divert the river flow—so that it would not strike below the railway—and the stabilization of the landslide mass were crucial in enabling the preparatory work carried out over these days, making it possible to reopen traffic.
I emphasize that the works required for the alternative road over the Shkumbin River and alongside the railway will require at least six days, according to our estimates. This involves 80,000 cubic meters of fill, 18,000 cubic meters of riverbank protection, and 2,800 tons of asphalt layers. These figures also need to be reviewed by experts.
The new segment will be open to all vehicles. The road has shown no signs of structural failure. This is the result of the measures taken in recent days, including the diversion of the river flow, which prevented erosion from below. The section will have a width of 9 meters. As an Authority, we have decided to suspend works on Corridor VIII until the completion of the alternative road works,” Kozeli stated.
