The National Folklore Festival of Gjirokastër has concluded, marking its 11th edition.

From 24 June to 1 July, some 1,200 folk artists from all regions of Albania, as well as the diaspora, took the stage at Argjiro Castle.

For the first time, the program included about 40 artistic and cultural activities that showcased the values of tradition, enlivening Gjirokastra and attracting a large number of tourists.

“The enthusiasm we have found here among the people, their involvement not only in the castle but also throughout the festival in ‘Çerçiz Topulli’ Square, and the meetings we have held during the day in the city have shown us that our efforts were worthwhile. We have not only achieved what we wanted but have also touched the hearts and memories of all Albanians. We have also noticed a significant number of foreign tourists,” said Minister of Culture Elva Margariti.

Due to its exceptional values in promoting and preserving national traditions, the Ministry of Culture will initiate the procedures to include the festival on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

“The documentation of this festival, and the work we have already started, is the first step and a positive move towards promoting it internationally. We are hopeful. We cannot express certainty about the outcome with UNESCO, but it is our desire,” stated Minister Margariti.

The National Folklore Festival returned to Gjirokastra after an eight-year hiatus, with its first edition organized in 1968.
