On March 7, 1887, the first Albanian national School, “Mësonjëtorja”, was opened in Korçë. Its first teacher and director was Pandeli Sotiri.
Although under difficult conditions, the Albanian School remained open for nearly 15 years, during which it overcame obstacles created by the clergy and the Ottoman occupiers.
Its leaders were prominent figures of the Albanian National Renaissance, such as Pandeli Sotiri, Petro Nini Luarasi, Nuçi Naçi, Thoma Avrami, etc. The significant contribution made by these patriots and distinguished activists to the nation is linked to their fervent desire to spread knowledge among the people.
The Albanian Renaissance leaders and patriots also initiated the drafting of the first textbooks for Albanian students. They worked diligently to equip the school with the necessary teaching tools.
The students who studied at this national school were educated with the spirit of patriotism. They became worthy followers of the national ideology and devoted fighters in the struggle for freedom and independence.
This event was a great victory for the Albanian people. Due to Ottoman rule, until this period, education was carried out clandestinely. Since that day, March 7 is known as Teacher’s Day and is celebrated by all Albanians.
