According to INSTAT data, the district of Gjirokastra is registering the lowest number of births in the country.
Doctors at the “Dhimitër Çuçi” maternity hospital confirm that the year 2022 was the lowest recorded in the last 30 years
“Birth rate, as everywhere in Albania, a significant decrease in births is observed here as well. Last year we closed with 286 births.
It is the lowest number we have had in the last 20-30 years. We think that two years ago we had about 350 births, in addition to other years that we reached 700-800 births per year,” said Migena Kuro, head of the service. Among the main causes for the low number of births is mass emigration, as well as the demographic movement from Gjirokastra towards other areas of the country.
“The majority of women are in Tepelën, Përmet and the rural areas of these cities compared to the rural area of Gjirokastra and the city of Gjirokastra. After all, the departure of a part of the population to Tirana or Ioannina has an effect here,” Kuro said.
