The year 2024 has seen a decline in the number of criminal offenses and repeat offenders, but there has been an increase in the number of victims and criminal proceedings.
According to data from the State Police, recorded criminal offenses dropped by 3.5% compared to 2023. A total of 32,653 criminal offenses were registered, while 40,057 suspects were identified—a slight increase of 1.4% from the previous year.
Most suspects are male (93.7%), with the 30–44 age group representing the largest share at 36%. The number of first-time offenders remained stable at 33,453 cases.
A concerning trend is the rise in the number of crime victims. In 2024, 17,761 individuals were affected by crimes—an increase of 4.3% year-on-year. The majority were victims of crimes against the person and sexual violence, with 38.8% of all victims being women.
Criminal proceedings also increased. A total of 24,912 cases were registered in 2024, up 3.4% from 2023. Of these, 36.6% were dismissed, 26.8% were suspended, and 36.6% were sent to court.
The number of defendants fell by 5.7%, totaling 13,167 individuals—94.6% of whom are men. The prison population also saw a notable decline of 13.1%, dropping to 4,491 inmates.
Among those serving sentences, the 21–29 age group makes up the largest segment, while individuals under 20 and over 60 have the lowest incarceration rates.
The growing number of victims and court proceedings remains a serious concern. Crimes against the person and sexual violence are among the issues that demand increased attention in the coming period.
