More than 30,000 tourists have visited the Museum of Medieval Art in Korça during the past year. Some of the rarest icons of the 16th and 17th centuries are located in this institution.
The Museum of Medieval Art in Korça, which offers a fascinating experience, has also been the most visited institution by local and foreign tourists in 2023.
The director of this museum, Fjoralba Prifti, said that during the past year, the museum was visited by more than 30,000 tourists.
According to her, tourists are amazed by the objects exhibited in this museum, objects that belong to the 13th century, while most of them belong to the 16th-18th centuries, the period when Albanian iconography had its peak.
“The year 2023 has been a very successful year and there are more than 30,000 visitors, more of them are foreigners, but we also have an increase in domestic visitors.
The harmony between the contemporary building and the medieval icons is a very big surprise for local and foreign visitors. They feel satisfied and get to know the values of our cultural heritage which they did not know before, this makes it very popular and sought after”, said Fjoralba Prifti.
In order to attract as many visitors as possible, the Museum of Medieval Art opened during the tourist season several exhibitions with icons that were displayed for the first time.
“In addition to the permanent exhibition, we also make temporary exhibitions with previously unexhibited icons that are restored by our restorers, every year there are around 30 icons that are restored and then we introduce them to the public.
As for the number of visitors, each month has had its own surprises, but the largest number remains during the summer season where they have the opportunity to see the icons belonging to the 13th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
Even in the first days of this year, there was no shortage of people curious about history and culture.
In the museum of medieval art in Korça, the only one of its kind in Albania, there are more than 7,200 icons, 400 of which are on display for visitors.
