40% more accidents registered during June: INSTAT

The start of the summer season and the increase in road traffic have been accompanied by a rise in vehicle collisions and related injuries.

June saw a significant increase in the number of accidents in the country, according to data from the Institute of Statistics (INSTAT). From 101 accidents in June 2023, the number rose to 141 in the same month this year, marking an increase of about 40%.

There was also a notable increase in the number of people injured. INSTAT reported a total of 195 injured (dead and wounded) in June, up from 132 in the same period last year, representing a 48% increase.

In the first six months of the year, the country experienced 767 accidents, a 46.3% increase compared to January-June of the previous year. The number of injured has also risen in line with this trend.

Over a thousand people have been injured in road accidents in the first six months of the year, which is about 45% more compared to the same period last year.

According to INSTAT data, in June 2024, there were 141 road accidents, with 195 people injured (dead and wounded). INSTAT notes that the published data are preliminary and subject to updates.

During the first half of 2024, the fatality rate in road accidents was 9.8 per 100 accidents, down from 17.0 in the same period of the previous year.

Road accidents, in 92.9% of cases, occurred due to the behaviour of the vehicle driver. The highest number of accidents during this period was caused by the age groups 0-24 and 60+, each accounting for 21.3% of the total number of accidents.

In June 2024, the highest number of road accidents occurred on Fridays, with 17.7%, while the lowest number of accidents occurred on Wednesdays, with 9.2%.

The highest number of road accidents occurred between 08:00 and 12:00, accounting for 18.4% of the total number of road accidents, according to INSTAT.
