Nearly one in five individuals in Albania lives on the poverty threshold. In numbers, about 480,000 people have low incomes and are at risk of living without minimum living standards.

According to data published by INSTAT for 2024, compared to 2023, there has been a decrease of 30,000 people living in difficult conditions.

The income threshold that defined poverty in 2023 was 680 lek per day, or about 20,400 lek per month.

Families most at risk of falling into poverty are those with dependent children under the age of 18 and living with only one parent. In contrast, families without children face a much lower risk.

Social benefits, such as old-age and family pensions, which are included in household income, reduce the risk of poverty. Without these benefits, 37% of the population would be at risk of falling into poverty.

Meanwhile, the average monthly income per capita last year was 51,000 lek, marking an increase of about 1,000 lek compared to 2023.
