Elderly individuals and chronically ill patients who are unable to move have received home healthcare services from nurses assigned to their respective areas.
The Director of the Healthcare Operator, Jeta Deda, stated in an interview with Euronews Albania that this service has been offered since 2022 in select regions, with eligible patients identified by family doctors.
“Around 5,200 patients received this service in 2024, with approximately 58,700 home visits conducted by healthcare professionals,” said Deda.
Family doctors play a key role in identifying the needs of these patients and determining a schedule for home visits and medical services.
“The services include vital sign assessments such as respiration, pulse, temperature, and blood pressure. Additionally, wound care, rapid testing for seasonal viruses, basic active exercises, use of inhalers, and urinary or venous catheter placement are also provided,” Deda explained.
As of October 2024, 12 out of 36 local healthcare units have been offering home healthcare services. Dibra and Fier have been recognized as model regions, training other units to expand the program.
In 2025, the service has been extended nationwide, ensuring broader access to home-based medical care for those in need.
