90 dead from road accidents in 5 months, drivers to blame in 80% of the cases

The number of road accidents in Albania remains an issue of concern, while over the last 5 months authorities recorded 547 accidents and 90 fatalities.

January logged the highest number of accidents, a total of 125, leaving behind 22 victims and another 165 injured.

In 80% of the cases, accidents are caused by reckless driving with the most common age group estimated at 25-34 years old, counting for 28% of the overall cases.

According to data from INSTAT, the country’s statistical institute, drivers are to be blamed in the majority of the cases. During these 5 months, the number of accidents caused by pedestrians increased by 42.3% compared to last year.

In comparison to last year, accidents rose by 40.3%, with an overall 547 accidents, compared to 390 in 2020.

In the first five months of 2021, road accidents claimed the lives of 90 citizens, compared to 58 from the previous year.
