Although crime statistics were on a decline in 2020, it seems that on the other hand isolation due to the pandemic fueled drug use and domestic violence.
According to the latest report released by the Institute of Statistics, crime rates dropped by 7% last year or translated in numbers, 32,700 fewer criminal offenses in comparison to figures from 2019.
However, domestic violence reports and drug-related offenses have increased compared to figures from the year before.
Drug use, as well as sale, grew by 5% from 2019.
Furthermore, there were 114 more attempted murders than in 2019, while 52 citizens fell victim to premeditated murders.
Domestic violence reports grew by 12.2%. According to experts, the phenomenon is fueled by isolation, particularly in the months of March-June.
In 2019, the number of people incarcerated in state prisons was 5,045, while this year this figure is at 4,614.
