Tirana mosque attack, attorney appeals to transfer the accused to a psychiatric ward

The attorney of Rudolf Nikolli, the 34-year-old arrested on terrorism-related charges after a stabbing attack at a mosque in Tirana called on the Court of Appeal to change the sentence and have his client removed from prison and sent to “a temporary treatment at a psychiatric ward”.

According to the attorney, the young man suffers from mental illnesses and it was not his intention to “spread panic in the population”.

He also emphasized that Nikolli has been a faithful Muslim since childhood and frequented places of worship quite often.

In the statements given to the police, Nikolli showed severe hallucinations signs and told fictitious stories.

The heinous attack took place on April 19 in the capital, Tirana where the accused went inside the premises of a Mosque at “Rruga e Kavajës” and stabbed five worshippers.

None of the injured sustained life-threatening wounds.

He was neutralized by random by-passers and was later arrested by cops.
