A so-called “For the DP” group has emerged after election results were out seeking to reform the Democratic Party.
Members of this newly formed group are distinctive names in the ranks of the Democrats, including former president Bujar Nishani, Arben Imami, Edith Harxhi, Arben Ristani, Endira Bushati.
On Thursday, they gathered to discuss their own stances while internal party elections are due in July.
During a press conference held today by the group, Edith Harxhi said that “We can’t demand better governance in the country when the party itself is not being led properly. We can’t fight corruption when the former is sizzling at the top of the party, on all political parties. We, as a group of the DP, are proposing a deep reformation of the Democratic Party, a model of opening and uniting with all forces”.
The Democratic Party was only able to secure 59 mandates out of a total of 140, while the Socialist Party won a third consecutive term with 74 mandates, a first in the country since the fall of the half-century-long Communist regime.
The Democrats have not recognized election results and have warned that they are currently gathering evidence in what they called an “electoral massacre”.
