Journalist and host of Euronews Albania’s political analysis show ‘In a few words’, Neritan Sejamini stated during Ilva Now that today’s decision taken by the US Department of State declaring the former PM Sali Berisha persona non-grata, was a clear political action, in order to achieve clear political goals in today’s Albanian political arena.
According to him, if Berisha would have resigned from politics back in 2013, this decision wouldn’t have been taken against him.
What has influenced the US, according to Sejamini, is the influence that the former Chair of DP is thought to have in this party, especially at this time, when the opposition has decided to undertake actions regarding non-concession of the recent general elections.
“Berisha is thought to have an influence on the opposition and especially at this moment when the opposition has decided to undertake the institutional road regarding the elections. Berisha has a fundamental influence regarding decision-making within the opposition. This should be judged as a political act, in order to achieve political goals that are linked to the current political situation. Firstly, the opposition should concede the elections and accept to go to the institutions. The American government also has an interest in the reform of justice. They have been waiting for convictions in the high levels of politics; with this decision, they have wanted to give another encouragement to the new prosecutors to continue their job,” said Sejamini.
