The ‘For DP’ group within the Democratic Party asked for a postponement of the date meant to hold the elections for the new party leadership, which are set to take place on June 13th. According to them, this early electoral process, at a time when the party’s statute foresees July 22nd instead of June 13th, strips them of the chance to analyze the results of the April 25th general elections.

“We remain certain and give our responsible judgment that the settlement of the date June 13th 2021, for the next party leadership elections, is a clear violation of the demand for an honest, trustworthy and beneficial race for the Democratic Party. This kind of verdict, prejudges the results, even before the electoral race has even started!” says the letter sent to the Chair of DP, Lulzim Basha.

Even though in this letter the recent decision of the U.S Department of State to declare former PM Sali Berisha persona ‘non-grata’ isn’t mentioned explicitly, the groups clearly states that the date should be postponed “to a more suitable political time, taking into consideration the recent developments, this is beneficial not only to the Party but also to our country and our citizens”.

“Looking forward to your response, we’d like to express our full commitment to take part, with full responsibility, in the thorough and necessary reformation of the Democratic Party of Albania, in order to remake it a vessel of Albanians’ lost hope, like it was in 1990, the political and institutional expresser of good values that distinguish a party of the center-right, as well as the values of the Albanian nation and Albanian people,” concluded the letter for the “For DP” group.
