EU Ambassador to Albania, Mr. Luigi Soreca, praised the progress made in Albania on the fight against organized crime, during a press conference in Korça, alongside other European diplomats, within the framework of the Europe Weeks tour.
Recalling the 29th anniversary of the assassination of Italian Judge Falcone, Ambassador Soreca said that justice reform is creating many “Falcones” in Albania.
“This day is a special day, because 29 years ago, an important magistrate in Italy was killed. Today is the 29th anniversary of the death of Falcone. He was the one who invented following the money concept. They killed Falcone, but they didn’t kill his ideas and his values. Albania has done progress also in fighting organized crime. Is it enough? No, it is not enough. It is enough to start accession talks, but a lot needs to be done in this area, in the fight against money laundering,” the Ambassador said.
As regards Albania’s EU bid, the ambassador stressed that “the European Union will not be complete if it does not include the countries of the Western Balkans.”
Ambassador Soreca was also asked by reporters about the US Department of State decision to not allow former Prime Minister Sali Berisha and his family to travel to the United States.
The head of the EU Delegation said he respects the US decision, but added that he does not have any comment on it.
