During a press conference earlier today, the candidate for the leadership of the Democratic Party, Agron Shehaj, claimed that the force that has been leading the party up until now, can not bring DP its victory, because according to him, its leadership is trying to pass the defeat as something normal that doesn’t need reflection.
Shehaj argued that one of the reasons that led him to run for the leadership of the Democratic Party was his conviction that after the last elections, Lulzim Basha cannot bring DP its victory.
“On June 13th, the members of DP will be deciding whether they want to lose again, or not. A thorough and immediate reform is necessary. Being a party Chair, shouldn’t just be a privilege, but a responsibility too. I will propose changes in the statute so that the leader cannot be reelected if he or she loses the elections,” said Shehaj.
According to Shehaj, one of the biggest problems in the Democratic Party at the moment is the lack of meritocracy, which is why in order to win the elections, DP needs to undergo reforms and be open to the youth as well as the older members.
“The members should be the ones deciding on the careers of the structures and leaders of the party,” said Shehaj.
When asked by Euronews Albania’s journalist, Elona Gjylmi whether he would remain part of DP’s parliamentary group if Lulzim Basha gets reelected as the party leader, Shehaj stated that he will continue, if he doesn’t get expelled.
Shehaj pointed out that he has nothing personal with Basha, but according to him, this is something bigger that has to do with the fate of the party and the country.
“It’s nothing personal, with Basha. He has done nothing bad to me. But we can’t continue to wait any longer after the elections were lost; this is a matter that concerns the fate of the party and Albania. We let in power one of the most corrupt governments in the last 30 years,” said Shehaj.
