As Vlora has officially kicked of its summer season and with tourist operators ready to welcome a successful season, it appears, that at least on a legal perspective, Albanian beaches are not ready yet.

Applications at the government-run application e-Albania, where businesses can apply to get a certificate to use the public space at the beach after fulfilling the necessary criteria, are open until June 16.

“Lifeguards are mandatory at beach stations, but not since the first phase when businesses apply, but only after they submit all the necessary documentation”, explained Ornela Bleta, an expert at the directorate of public property and assets.

However, despite the law being in force for some years now, the representative of the Albanian Federation of Lifeguards says that there are very few young people applying for the position.

The certificates issued by the federation are internationally recognized so many choose to find employment abroad.

“One of the criteria that businesses have to use the beach is to have a lifeguard. There are 230 beaches and we’ve only had 4 applications. An extremely low figure”, Kamberal said.

Security at the beach is an important element of the overall tourism season, with several incidents recorded, including victims.
