The parliamentary commission tasked to probe into the alleged violations committed by Albanian President Ilir Meta concluded that the head of state had “seriously violated” the Constitution with his actions during the electoral period.
The final 96-page report, read by Euronews Albania, noted that the “President infringed 17 articles of the Constitution” and that “the violations are seen as serious by the commission”.
Lawmakers of the Socialist majority contend that the violations of the President were committed:
- without a justified reason
- by undermining human rights, social and political relations
- in a consistent manner
- by negatively affecting the functioning of the state in the social, political, and economic realm
- openly against the responsibility, self-restraint, seriousness, and maturity that needs to display a high state official
“[…] based on this reasoning provided by in the report, the commission concludes that the acts, behavior, and stance of the President of the Republic, that were reviewed during the time being of the investigation, stand against with his constitutional role and post”, the report states, in addition to a request addressed to the Assembly for its approval.
On Monday, the parliamentary body tasked with managing the Assembly’s agenda decided that on Wednesday, June 9 it will hold a session for the impeachment of President Ilir Meta.
If the parliament approves the report and votes in favor of the president’s impeachment, the case will then pass to the Constitutional Court which will have the final say.
On the other hand, the Albanian president has described the process as well as the Inquiry Commission as “unconstitutional”.
