The candidate for the leadership of the Democratic Party, Agron Shehaj, said during an interview on Ilva Now that the DP needs to become stronger and return being a party supportive of democracy and meritocracy.

“I think that we need to strengthen the DP, there is a myriad of external reasons. We need to increase our support to the electorate, unite the party and bring strong and skilled people closer”, said Shehaj.

The candidate running for the party’s leadership said that the DP needs a leader that is more democratic and inclusive, who thinks and works for the interest of its members.

He also spoke about his own personal success at the parliamentary polls after receiving around 13.000 votes.

“I didn’t intend to bring the votes I received home, but they were for the DP. Those candidates that have received more votes should be praised and not be judged why that happened. This is absurd and it goes to tell how the party should not be ruled”, Shehaj said.

Furthermore, he said that he has been a subject of attacks on social media by people affiliated with the Democratic Party that have an anti-American approach after meeting with US Ambassador Yuri Kim.

“There was a lot of criticism because many Democrats are hurt by the State Department’s decision to designate Berisha “non-grata” and it is understandable,” said Shehaj. “But on the other hand, there were attacks by people working for the DP who took advantage of this resentment and are recently working on an entirely anti-American approach”, said Shehaj at Ilva Now.
