On Friday, the Institute of Virology, Vaccines and Sera “Torlak” will begin producing Sputnik V, Russia’s coronavirus vaccine.

Minister of Technology Nenad Popovic confirmed the story on Twitter and said that there will be a celebration ceremony to be attended by many top Serbian and Russian state officials.

“Together we win!”, he added.

“First of all, allow me to inform you that the substance for the production of the vaccine has just landed at the Sheremetyevo International Airport and will be transported to Belgrade this afternoon. It is being carried in special containers. Of course, Serbia will help everyone in the region at first, but also others in the world. The vaccine is mainly intended for the citizens of Serbia”, explained minister Popovic.

On May 19, the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Russia certified the quality of a Sputnik V testing sample that had been produced at the Torlak Institute in Belgrade.

Shortly thereafter, the Institute gave the green light that Sputnik V was safe for usage.

In February, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic spoke over the phone to discuss manufacturing the Russian jab in Serbia.

After their phone call, Vucic said that Serbia, with the assistance of Russian experts, will start building capacities in order to produce the vaccine independently.

Serbia has based its vaccination rollout on four vaccines, Pfizer and BioNTech, AztraZeneca, Sinopharm, and Sputnik V.

The Serbian Ambassador to Russia, Miroslav Lazanski, said that circa 85% of Serbians that had reserved an appointment opted for Sputnik V.
