In a video posted on Facebook, Prime Minister Edi Rama presented Albania’s priorities at the UN Security Council.

Among the priorities listed are

  • strengthening the role of women
  • defending human rights
  • promoting religious harmony
  • support for inclusive developmental policies and sustainable partnership
  • endorsing policies on climate change

The Security Council is a body that initiates and passes binding resolutions to its member states aimed at preserving peace and security in the world. The first meeting took place after WWII in 1946.

The Council has 5 permanent members, US, UK, France, Russia, and China, as well as 10 non-permanent members with a 2-year mandate.

To assure a periodical refreshment of the membership and without undermining the continuance and stability of the Council, every year five new non-permanent members are chosen which replace the preceding five, one of which designated to an Eastern European country.

On June 11, the UN General Assembly will decide who will be the country from Eastern Europe, with Albania being the only candidate, and as a result set to become the next non-permanent member for 2022-2023.

Last month, the Albanian government made an open call to all career diplomats to apply in order to become a part of the representing team.

After taking over the OSCE Presidency in 2020, this is one of Albania’s major diplomatic breakthroughs in 65 years.

From an IR perspective, there were significant developments last year as well when Besiana Kadare was elected vice president of the General Assembly as a representative of the Eastern European regional group, composed of the Balkan states, Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, etc.
