The Conference of Western Balkans Foreign Ministers is taking place today under the direction of the Foreign Minister of Germany, Heiko Maas and focused on the Berlin Process.
The news was announced by the deputy spokesperson of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andrea Sasse. The conference aimed to prearrange plans for the organization of the future summit between state leaders, which will be directed by chancellor Angela Merkel in the beginning of July.
According to Sasse, the Foreign Ministers of the Western Balkans will also be accompanied by the Foreign Ministers of several EU member states, as well as the Commissioner on Enlargement and the Neighbourhood, Olivér Várhelyi.
The Berlin Process is an initiative of the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, created in 2014. The aim is to improve regional collaboration amongst countries of the Western Balkans, in order to support the membership process into the EU of the following six countries: Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Montenegro and Serbia.
Germany’s initiative of the summit also includes organizers like Austria, France, Great Britain, Italy, Poland and Bulgaria. One of the achievements to date of the Berlin Process is the approval of the plan on the shared regional market as well as the attraction of youth through the regional office for youth collaboration.
